In CNC machining and other metal processing operations, various materials are used that should not remain on the finished part. As a result, cleaning is a critical stage in the manufacturing process. This requirement becomes even more important when cleaning parts intended for medical applications, such as implants, dental implants, laser system components, and many other products that require exceptionally high cleanliness levels.
The fundamental principle of any cleaning process is to separate contaminants from the surface and then remove them through a rinsing process.
In the metalworking industry, the primary cleaning method is solvent-based cleaning using equipment known as a degreaser.
Solvent-Based Cleaning Systems - Degreaser Cleaning
In brief, this cleaning method uses a cleaning agent (sometimes two different agents) capable of removing contaminants from parts. Cleaning is performed both in the liquid phase and in the vapor phase. A degreaser includes a heated chamber where the cleaning agent is vaporized, creating a layer of vapor above the tanks, and a separate chamber containing clean, cooled solvent continuously regenerated through condensation using a water-cooled coil system located above the chambers.
The cleaning agent must be carefully selected to ensure compatibility with all contaminants generated throughout the manufacturing process, while taking all process-related parameters into consideration.
Selecting the right cleaning equipment requires expertise and experience. Factors such as production volume, cycle time, part geometry, part positioning within the cleaning chamber, required cleanliness levels, the need for additional kinetic energy, ultrasonic agitation, and many other parameters must be evaluated to achieve the desired cleaning results.
One of the key factors influencing the decision-making process is equipment cost. However, it is equally important to consider the ongoing operating costs of the process, as these are typically more significant than the initial equipment investment.
